This was playing with Picasso. Picasso painted, in similar colors, Marie Therese Walter, reading a book, sitting in a chair. His work always felt playful, I think he had found his stride in his twenties and just followed that creative flow for the next seventy years. I wanted to feel that simple unselfconscious playing with surface. And, in this painting, I did. I scratched into the surface as he did, I constructed the base colors and the drawing of the figure in similar manner, but not exactly in any particular.
