The villa house in Santa Barbara photographed here is facing the ocean from above Cliff Drive on the West Mesa, in local terms. This means it faces partially south, more southwest than west. Out in the distance from the windows are the channel islands, on a clear day. This is light coming across the patio and through the open french doors. The room gets so much light that the curtains are heavy, light diffusing.
I was looking at the contrast in light and shadow from the photograph, and translating that into color and motion in the painting.
The process was pastel sketch – pastel is inert under acrylic paint, where ink or charcoal or pencil can bleed through over time. The airbrush underpainting, bright primary colors and then the body of the painting.
