This was a painting asked for by my daughter. She asked for a painting, without specification of what to be painted. I said ok, send me some beach and sunset photos. She said sure! And then in the busy-ness of her life and mine, that didn’t happen. In 2008 I was watching the approach of winter in New England, the leaves getting thin and changing color, the grass sparser and stiff with frost. The cold and the darkness coming earlier and earlier. This starts about mid-August and continues through to November, when true winter finally sets in. I determined my next painting was going to be the California warmth I remembered, and that painting that warmth and golden light as the winter and dark evening set in would be a very cool contrast.

It was. This was a composite of three photos, none used literally.
