Taxi 1954

Taxi, 1954, painting by Spence Munsinger of Taxi at the Curb in New York

I love Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest”. From the title sequence to the vintage New York, the sleeper cars on trains and the fight scene at the end, to James Mason’s accent, and Leonard Malden’s sidekick character. One scene has Cary Grant stepping out of a bright red taxi, just a very quick throwaway shot. This painting is about that moment, that brief time of the mid 1950’s in New York.

I drew the sketch on the canvas, and I like the lines so much I hung it like that for almost a year and a half, before working through color and form.
